I have a question about foreign exchange students…hosting them?
If I were to apply to host a foreign exchange student TODAY, when is the soonest I could get a foreign exchange student in my house?

Also, what is the shortest length of time you can host a foreign exchange student? (during the school year, not in the summer)

    Thanks for your time!

It depends on the school or company you apply through. Your best bet is to contact the school or company and ask them these questions directly. However, I would suspect that the soonest an exchange student would arrive would be at the start of the next semester, in January and I would imagine the shortest term they could stay would be 4 months (one semester).

My client received a 1099-misc for reimbursements of hosting foreign college students.?
How do I account for this on the tax return? I couldn’t imagine recognizing this as income. Would a schedule C be used to report income and expenses to offset the 1099 amount? It says in publication 526 if you are reimbursed in any way you cant deduct any of your hosting expences?

Uhhh… Maybe you had better go back and reread IRS Pub 526, particularly page 4. It quite clearly states that you CAN deduct costs as charitable donations under certain circumstances. The sponsoring agency generally must qualify to receive deductible charitable donations and must not be a government agency. The specific things that can be deducted are enumerated as are the things that cannot be deducted.

The amounts paid to your client should be reflected in box 3 of Form 1099-MISC and are reported on line 21 of Form 1040, Other Income.

Exchange students: sending your child abroad and hosting a foreign student?
On the subject of exchange studies what are some organizations like ASPECT foundation that allow you to send your child abroad in exchange for hosting a foreign student. I’d appreciate any information that you can give me.

It doesn’t exactly work that way — a one-to-one exchange. Most programs will give you an allowance off of sending YOUR child if you host however.

The top three are AFS, YFU and Rotary Exchange — although Aspect isn’t a bad program either. I’m not sure of the specifics of Rotary, as they are set up differently from the others. But generally, if you host a student, you do get a discount for your child.

If you wish to host, you really need to contact the school that the student would attend. There are a great many programs out there and not all schools accept all programs. The counselor will have that information. Also, the slots for exchange students are generally limited — so you’ll want to get on the list as soon as possible.

Once you get contact information, set up some interviews (remember, YOU are in the driver’s seat as most programs actively seek both host families AND students to travel abroad). Go with the organization you feel most comfortable.

      Good luck!
